Susan reached out to me a few years ago, feeling - Depressed, Miserable, Tired and Overwhelmed.

Now, Susan had tried everything, and I mean EVERYTHING: Juice Plus, Herbalife, Weight Watches, Slimming World, P90X, The Body Coach etc.

She’d gone to Zumba, tried the low-carb approach, done 21-day detoxes and even hired other personal trainers, but she’d still got nowhere.

In fact, if anything Susan had got fatter.

The wobble around her mid-section was now a whole lot more.

It shook when she walked, sagged when she stood up, and left her having to buy clothes 2 sizes too big just so she could hide it underneath baggy t-shirts.

And worst of all, she got out of breath just from walking up a flight or stairs…

It wasn’t just the physical effects either. 

Knowing she was overweight, seriously unhealthy and heading to an early grave was one thing, but what hurt more was the mental anguish.

Susan was at a crossroads…

On the one hand, she knew she needed to change.

She didn’t want to be the tubby woman who walks around self-conscious all the time, gets embarrassed in front of her husband, avoiding photos, or reluctant to be out in public…

Susan knew the only way to change this was to lose weight, but how did she do that?
 
All her friends could lose weight at the click of their fingers, and the models in her magazines always said their secret was their cardio routine, their clean diets, or their fat burner pills.

She’d tried all of those, and none of them worked. In her mind, her body was different, and she was stuck with her ugly, stubborn fat forever.

Now, my methods are - how shall we say … Somewhat unconventional.

See, I’m going to get you eating more food than you’ve ever had before on any diet. I’m also not going to ask you to do barely any cardio.

The appalling truth about the weight loss industry


I want to share a secret with you. Not just any secret…a big humongous secret that not many people know about! 

It’s not pleasant, so prepare yourself!

The weight loss industry actually wants you to fail with your weight loss efforts. 

Let me repeat that again, the weight loss industry does not want you to succeed in losing weight because it’s far more profitable for them to continue selling products, while you desperately search for the next meal replacement shake, or supplement that’s going to help you lose weight.

If you lose all the fat you want to lose, who’s going to buy all their products? 

Exactly!

They know this and they deliberately manipulate you so you continue buying their products.
 
Let me tell you a quick story...

A client of mine was taking these meal replacement shakes every single day, I won’t tell you which one it was, but you can probably guess.

She had made okay progress taking these shakes. 

However, as soon as she stopped and went back to her normal eating again, she regained all the weight again.

Can you relate to this?

So she was forced to go back taking the meal replacement shakes (exactly what the company wanted her to do).

You see, the only reason these meal replacement shakes work is that they are typically low calorie. 

As such, this therefore creates a calorie deficit needed for fat loss. However, it’s the “calorie deficit” causing the fat loss, not the shakes.

When I started working with this particular client, she was terrified to come off the shakes, because she remembered the painful experience of what happened before i.e. she came off the shakes, went back to her normal eating and regained all the weight she had lost.

However, this time, I essentially got her eating similar calories to what she was consuming on the shakes, but this time from real food! And, she start losing fat once again.

Why?

Because it was the calorie deficit causing the fat loss, not anything magical about the shakes themselves. 

Not only was this client losing fat while eating proper food, she was also drinking alcohol, having cakes, pizza and cookies, too!

Now, I’m not for one second saying she was eating these all the time, but once you understand about this new thing called “flexible dieting”….I will explain more later, it will change your life.

How does losing fat, while still eating your favourite foods sound?

Pretty good, eh?

It’s all about understanding calories, proteins, carbohydrates and fats and this little-known weight loss secret called the “calorie deficit”.

You’ve probably heard of the calorie deficit before….but not while eating your favourite foods.

Let me explain!


Introducing "Flexible Dieting"


In very simple terms, the key to losing body fat is to essentially create what is called a calorie deficit over a period of time.

That essentially means your body is burning more calories than you’re burning.

However, your body doesn’t know what foods you’re eating to create this calorie deficit. As such, it’s a false presumption you “must eat clean to lose fat”.

If you’re creating a calorie deficit, you will lose weight!

Period!

That gives a lot more room for flexibility with your food sources than you first thought.

Am I right?

You’re might be saying though, surely this isn’t healthy?

Good question. 

I’m not saying 100% of your calories should come from junk.

However, if you’re creating a calorie deficit and 70/80% of your intake is coming from good quality whole food sources. You’ll be meeting all your micro nutrient needs too.

Then you can have 20/30% of your intake from whatever you want. Cookies, ice cream, pizza, chocolate…you name it.

In short, you’re essentially consuming the right amount of calories to lose fat, then consuming 70/80% of your intake from mainly whole food, so you’re getting all the health benefits from those…and then the rest (20/30%) is coming from what you want, so you don’t feel deprived and you can therefore stick to the diet for longer.

I remember taking on a new client told me that her previous trainer essentially wouldn’t let her eat anything that wasn’t on her boring and bland meal plan.

When she did have something that wasn’t on the meal plan, she felt guilty and would often binge.

Can you relate?

The trainer then proceeded to have a go at her for not sticking to boring and bland meal plan. This is no way to achieve sustainable results, while enjoying the process.

When she started working with me, no foods were off limits, she started losing fat, while not feeling deprived and not feeling the cravings to binge because at no point did she cut out any of her favourite foods.

It’s a beautiful thing when you start losing fat, without giving up your favourite foods. It’s like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.

Sound good?

Let’s move on…


Fat loss is simple. It’s only diet companies that make it so complicated because they just want you to continue buying all their products! Really though it just comes down to a simple 4 step formula.



Step #1: Calculate your basal metabolic rate.


Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is essentially how many calories you burn every day doing nothing. 

If you just laid in bed all day and did nothing, your BMR is how many calories you would burn if you just did this.

Let’s give you an example…

A 35 females who’s 5 foot 4 inches and 160lbs (72.6kg approximately) would have a BMR of 1,470 calories.

If she laid in bed all day she would burn approximately 1,470 calories.

That’s step 1 complete.

Still with me?

Don’t panic, it will all make sense shortly.


Step #2: Activity level


Once we have figured out your basal metabolic rate, we need to then multiply this figure by activity multiplier.

Let’s be honest, you’re not going to just be lying in bed all day are you?

You’re going to be moving around, walking up and down stairs, playing with the kids and exercising etc.

If you did little to no exercise, you would multiply your BMR by 1.2.

So, going back to our example, it would be 1,470 x 1.2 = 1,764 .

If you did light exercise 1-3 times per week, we would multiply your BMR by 1.3 Therefore the equation would be 1,470 x 1.3 = 1,911

That’s just a couple of examples in the formula. If you were training 5-6 times per week, you would obviously need more calories than if you were training 1-2 times per week.

Once you have figured this out, If you eat more than this, you put on weight, if you eat less than this, you will lose weight. It really is that simple.

As a general guide, deduction 500 calories from this figure will give you a good target to aim for to lose fat.


Step #3: Macro nutrients


Once we have set up our basal metabolic rate calories and multiplied this by our activity multiplier. 

We then need to set up some macro nutrients. What are macro nutrients you ask?

That’s: Protein, carbohydrates and fats.

Proteins main role when you’re trying to lose fat is to preserve lean muscle mass. This is important for males and females. 

If you’re a female, you don’t want to be stick thin, you wan to have curves in the right places and toned muscles, this is achieved by consuming sufficient protein.

Carbohydrates is the body’s preferred use for fuel.

Fat is important for hormone production and can also be used for energy.

In short, all good diets have a mixture of all the above.

Here’s the thing.

A cookie has carbs, protein and fat in it. A slice of pizza has carbs, protein and fats in it. Ice cream, cakes etc. all have macro nutrients in them. 

As long as you’re getting in the right amounts of macro nutrients, you can achieve the body you desire.

Remember what we spoke about earlier?

In short, you’re essentially consuming the right amount of calories and macronutrients to lose fat, then consuming 70/80% of your intake from mainly whole food, so you’re getting all the health benefits from those…and then the rest (20/30%) is coming from what you want, so you don’t feel deprived and you can therefore stick to the diet for longer.


Step #4: Accountability, making changes when you plateau & flexibility


The final piece of the puzzle is accountability, making changes when you plateau and flexible.

Being flexible means being flexible with your food choices. Making sure you are still including all the foods you love, not eliminating any foods unnecessarily.

Making changes when you plateau. Ever followed a diet or exercise program, started seeing some good fat loss and then all of a sudden your results just stopped, like someone just slammed the handbrake on, on your fat loss goals?

Can you relate?

These plateaus are actually normal, and there will be multiple plateaus within every fat loss phase. The secret is knowing how to get through them. 

In simplistic terms, you need to manipulate your nutrition or training to continue creating the calorie deficit needed for fat loss. It’s more complex than that, but that is the general gist.

Accountability. There’s no surprise every top athlete in the world has a coach to keep them accountable. Start looking for ways to get accountable. 

Find a workout buddy, get a coach, find accountability groups.

"Over 8 weeks...I went from 56kg to 50.7kg and body fat of 23.4% to 16.9%"

"I commenced a 8 week fat loss programme starting on the 7th March whereby on a weekly basis, I was given my macronutrient targets and a specific weight training programme and varying cardio sessions which were specific to the main areas that I wanted to work.

On a weekly basis I would email the changes in my measurements and James would make any necessary amendments based on my progress and my ultimate goals … the upshot was that over the 8 weeks, although already very lean, I went from 56kg to 50.7kg and body fat of 23.4% to 16.9%, with improvements in muscle definition in my legs, abs, arms shoulders... well, all over really! 

After the fat loss phase, we then worked on a muscle building phase, focusing on some major compound lifts to build strength – I was really please that for someone who is relatively petite, I improved my free standing weighted squats from 30kg to 70kg, Sumo deadlifts from 40kg to 72kg and bench press from 25kg to 40kg)!

More importantly I learned how to balance my daily intake of protein, carbs and fats to get the results I wanted and also how to change this depending upon whether I was on fat loss phase or muscle building phase.

The great news is that although I have not worked on a programme with James since August and essentially continued alone, I have been able to maintain and improve on both my strength training and nutrition plan – that’s not to say that I haven’t ‘fallen off the wagon’ occasionally, however through the learning process I went through with James I have been able to get back on track in no time…. And learned not to beat myself up about it!

The nutrition advice was second to none, you can incorporate lots of flavours in your cooking AND still stay within your macronutrient guidelines! So all in all, I would highly recommend anyone to try out James to support you with your fitness and nutrition goals.

​The online coaching is giving you the best of personal training without the parts you do not need.

You do not need a trainer to count reps for you, or stand next to you in the gym.
 
However, you do need a bespoke training and nutrition plan tailored to your goals/lifestyle, changes made to the plan subject to your progress and accountability to guide and support you throughout the whole process.

Therefore, the online coaching is providing you with a blueprint tailored to you and your goals. All you need to do is implement it and I will provide you accountability and support throughout the process, in addition to implementing the necessary tweaks to your nutrition and training when needed so that you continue to progress.

All of this is provided within an extensive spreadsheet and PDF, all bespoke to you and your goals. You will check-in within me twice per week via email, I then respond via video, analysing your progress and make changes when needed. 

You are accountable to me throughout the process and you have unlimited email access to me personally in-between the check-ins.

Who is the online coaching for?

The coaching is for people who have either goals of losing body, gaining muscle (or both). It is important that you have at least 6 months weight training experience. 

How long does the online coaching last for?

There is no contract with the online coaching. However, I do have a minimum sign of commitment of 2 months. 

Is there any equipment needed to do the coaching?

Ideally you would be a member of a gym with access to free weights. However, if you have dumbbells and barbells as home, I can tailor a program to suit the equipment you have available. However, you must have at least a barbell, or a set of dumbbells.

Is this for females too?

Yes, the coaching is suitable for males and females. As long as you have goals of either fat loss, muscle growth (or both), I can help you to achieve your goals.

Why is it different?

It’s different because you will be able to lose fat whilst still eating your favourite foods. No foods are are off limits!

Do I need a gym or can I do it from home? 

You either need to be a member of a gym, or have access to barbells or dumbbells to train at home. 

Counting calories sounds hard! I’m not sure I can do it?  

Of course you can! Like any skill, the more you practice, the easier it gets. I also have some secret tactics to make this process even easier. 

I’ve tried products/ coaching in the past - what makes yours different? If I have issues, can I contact you? 

Yes, you can contact me 24/7 and I will reply within 24 hours.  The biggest difference between me & other coaches & programs is they’ll have you eating chicken, broccoli & brown rice 6 times per day. I use a flexible dieting approach with my coaching which allows you to still eat your favourite foods while losing fat. 

Also, most other coaches take on way too many clients online & in person. I only have a small number of in person clients & only work with 25 clients online at any one time, so I can offer my very best to you. 

How soon can I get started? 

Coaching plans are completed within 5 working. So, it’s a very quick turnaround. 
How is it delivered?  The coaching is delivered via my personal videos by myself. So it’s as close to you being with me in person. The plans are created via spreadsheet and PDF documents.
